I, like a lot of women, was introduced to the sport of paintball through my significant other. (My boyfriend was & still is, the die-hard tournament baller.) I can still remember my first time was at a BIG GAME at Liberty Paintball Games…me, in my tiger-striped camouflage, a remote harness (I didn’t dare carry the tank screwed into the gun-it was far too heavy!) and my good ol’ Automag! I looked like a 10-year old boy! Getting shot for the first time was the catalyst for me to try NOT to get shot again. It hurt like a son of a gun but, I became an addict. (Well, getting my first head shot on a reputable player didn’t hurt, either.) J
Ever since, I play paintball recreationally on the weekends and in the off time, traveled & supported my boyfriend’s teams to various local & national events. I was introduced to the world of speedball. Blow up bunkers, high-end markers, colorful jerseys, different formats, various leagues…just the paintball culture! Watching better players encouraged me to analyze my own game play however, we know paintball demands a lot of time and money, so, I was content with my involvement in the sport at that time. I took on being a referee at Liberty Paintball Games in Patterson, NY on the weekends to be more involved with paintballing. And being a visual artist, I started designing paintball jerseys for various teams like the N.Y Misfitz and Liberty Minutemen. It really is gratifying to see your art come to life on the field-especially when they perform exceptionally well.
Paintball, ironically, is made up of a dichotomy of people. You get the really nice, down to earth guys who would hand you the shirts off their back, coach and encourage you, and on the other hand, you get the assholes who are just too high on themselves to ever consider taking a girl seriously in the sport. I’ve come across both. I began playing local tournaments with guys who just wanted to go out there and have a good time. It didn’t matter whether we won or lost.
Goodbye Kitty, a team I put together, came in first place in Staten Island @ Cousins Paintball. Since then, I was invited by a former Femmes Fatales (Monica Aliago-Lopes) to play with The New Jersey Jesters Pink (an all female team) at the New Jersey Open and, we actually made the cut to Semis! That was a great experience on the national level in a completely unfamiliar format, PSP. I’ve also played in the New England Paintball League events with Goodbye Kitty, placing 11th and 4th respectively. 2011 was my first season at tournament play and, 2012 will be a continuation of that. I do not expect to become pro and I do not expect to become rich. However, I DO expect to see more females in the sport. I would love to see more people supporting female ballers. Plant a seed, nourish it & it shall grow to potential. Neglect it & it will never even have the chance to sprout. With that being said, see y’all at the next event!!

I was bit by the paintball bug when my best friend invited me to go play with her friends. Not knowing what i was getting myself into i showed up in jeans and a tshirt. Quickly getting into a sexy camo suit and with my awesome rental gun i was ready to face the world. Thinking back now, I am almost positive I sat crouched the whole time afraid to get shot, before getting the courage to move up several inches. But something sparked in me that day that made me want more. So I kept going back, and eventually wound up as a paintball ref at the same field where I met Sony. We hit it off, and I really wanted to get more into the sport. She had mentioned Goodbye kitty to me, but I wasnt able to really get into it because i went of fto college. However, skipping forward to my sophomore year, i joined the paintball team at my school. Temple University. I am the only girl on the team but hope to change that! This past year i really took off with my speedball, learning the ins and outs of the trade, I find myself really enjoying it. Paintballing is a sport where anything can happen! Its that level of unknown that makes it so much fun to play. Where are you going to go off of break? Where are you going to have a bruise the next day on your body? What new gun are you looking to get? What color? There is so much to this sport, and it is just getting into its prime. I am really excited for my future with my college team, as well as my lovely ladies on goodbye Kitty. if anything, I want to get more girls into this sport because this sport is fun! And it all starts with picking up that rental gun and camo suit.
